Mistake # 1 -Wasting Hours on Social Media

While social media can be inspiring, it can also lead you down a long and deep rabbit hole!

Too many ideas can leave you stuck, confused, and totally overwhelmed.

And the worst part? You end up scrolling forever, then run out of steam having made zero progress!.

I’m not saying social media isn’t a great tool. I use it all the time for ideas. But things get tricky when you’re stuck in indecision mode and can’t move past the initial research stage.

So instead, use Instagram and Pinterest as a tool to gather your initial ideas and then set them aside to focus on creating a clear and realistic plan. You can then channel all of your energy into moving your kitchen project forward.

Mistake # 2 -Inadequate Planning

It doesn't matter how beautiful your kitchen looks, if the space planning and functionality of the space hasn't been considered, the end result may fall short.

I know how tempting it can be to fast forward and start shopping for your cabinets straight away. But if you take a step back, envision how you want the space to function and feel, you'll start off on a really solid foundation.

So what exactly should you be thinking about and planning for? Let's take a look.

  • Determine your priorities: Make a list of what you absolutely need in your kitchen and what you can live without. This will help you make decisions during the design process (and can also help with your budget.)

  • Consider the layout: This comes down to who will be using the space and how it's going to be used. For example, if you love to entertain, an open plan design may be more suitable. Or if you are a baking wizard, why not create a baking zone?

  • Don't forget about functionality: While aesthetics are important in creating a beautiful kitchen, don't sacrifice functionality for looks. Make sure your appliances and workspaces are placed in convenient locations for your cooking needs.

  • Don't forget storage: Make sure to incorporate enough storage in your kitchen to avoid clutter and to keep everything organised. Think where things will go - this includes a space for the toaster, mixer, rice cooker etc, because having them out on the worktop will make your new space feel disorganised and messy.

  • How do you want your kitchen to feel: Light and airy? Cosy and welcoming? Relaxed and lived-in? Or immaculate and uncluttered? This will have an impact on everything, from the storage to the paint colours and the furniture to the decor.

Dream big and enjoy the process.

Mistake # 3 -Not Setting a Budget or Timeline

Starting off on the right foot is crucial. Establishing a realistic budget and project timeline will help you stay organised, on track, and avoid any nasty surprises along the way.

  • Set a budget that covers all expenses, even unexpected ones. This means allowing for all costs, not just the kitchen cabinets. Appliances, sinks, taps, flooring, heating, light fittings, furniture, window dressings, switches and sockets, hardware - they've all got to be paid for. And don't forget to set a contingency fund for unexpected costs.

  • Communicate with your builder to establish a clear timeline with deadlines for each phase. It means your builder will be accountable and ensures that the project stays on track. Plus it will help you to plan so you can get all the materials on site in time for the first and second fixes. Delays cost money, are frustrating and can have a knock-on effect.

  • Keep the communication open and honest throughout the process and address any concerns or changes promptly. If an issue crops up, discuss it straight away. Problems do happen, it's the nature of building work - it's the solutions that are key. Take a deep breath, stay calm, and make informed decisions, instead of acting impulsively.

Mistake # 4 - Poor or No Lighting Scheme

The biggest mistake I see - grids of downlights running across the ceiling. It makes my heart sink. It’s so easy to avoid and there’s so much more you can do with lighting. A good lighting scheme is an absolute game-changer, making it a pivotal element to invest in. If you only hire a designer for one thing - make it be for a killer lighting scheme.

Here's a few tips to get you started:

  • Get the lighting plan sorted as soon as your kitchen layout is set. Mix it up with overhead, task, and accent lighting for that perfect blend of style and function.

  • Light fixtures: Embrace decorative pendants, wall lights, and picture lights. Rows of downlights lack personality, so don't be afraid to mix and match styles, shapes and finishes.

  • Light controls: Dimmer switches or scene control lighting systems give you the power to set the mood so it's just right. Also, think about your switch placement - easy access is key. And they should definitely not be located behind any doors!

  • Light temperature: I tend to stick to 2700 K, which is a warm light. Make sure you use the same kelvins throughout your home, to help create a harmonious flow between rooms.

  • Natural light: If possible, try to incorporate as much natural light into your kitchen design as you can, as it will make the space feel more open and inviting. Consider adding skylights, larger windows and/or glass doors.

A carefully planned lighting scheme is essential for every kitchen, no matter its size. If you are unsure of what to do, interior designers like myself, can do this for you. It’s worth every penny (even if I do say so myself!)
